Computational Challenges for Brain Science and Medicine

This panel aims at addressing the main issues concerning the computational challenges of brain science and medicine. As one of references, the ideas and developments of the European Human Brain Project will be discussed.

Understanding the human brain is one of the greatest scientific challenges of our times. Today, for the first time, exponential improvements in the capabilities of modern ICT open up new opportunities to investigate the complexity of the brain. This requires a focused plan to integrate and exploit the massive volumes of data and knowledge we already have, and the deluge of new data coming from labs all over the world. This will require the development of radically new ICT: new supercomputing technologies to federate and manage the data, to integrate it in computer models and simulations of the brain, to identify patterns and organizational principles that only appear when the data is put together, and to identify gaps to be filled by new experiments.

Web 25th Anniversary - History and Perspectives

This panel aims at discussing an impact of Web Intelligence and Web Technologies on current trends in worldwide research and applications, influencing our everyday lives. It is closely related to celebration of the 25th Anniversary of the Web. The panel will embrace an introduction to the history of the Web, its progress from Web 1.0 / 2.0 toward Web 3.0 / 4.0, and its connections to WI / IAT / AMT / BIH major topics. The panelists will share their experiences and impressions related to scientific and commercial projects in the areas such as Web data mining, digital media processing, search engines, mobile computing, and others.

Present and Prospective Issues of Science Communications

The purpose of this panel is to identify the issues challenging the science communications. As one of case studies, the outcomes and experiences of the SYNAT programme (www.synat.pl) aimed at building an Interdisciplinary System for Interactive Scientific and Scientific-Technical Information will be discussed.

Much like science itself, science communications - whose main objective is to support scientific research, study, and/or informed decision making - is subject to constant changes and innovations. More recent changes are a result of the pervasive ICT networks and facilities, and new business models in science journalism and publishing. Such phenomena as open access, open data, social media, review/opinion crowdsourcing, bibliometrics and scientometrics (for quantitative evaluation of research, researchers, and publishers), information overload or misinformation are just a few challenges faced by researchers and science administrators. We are witnessing the emergence of a new paradigm of science communications characterized by intra-science communications and science communications accessible to the general public (society). This paradigm shift will undoubtedly influence the overall academic culture and scientists themselves who will need to learn new know-hows, skills and habits.

Artificial Intelligence in Poland and Worldwide

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a truly fascinating field at the edge of Computer Science, Neuroscience, Linguistics, and many other sciences. It raises the foundations for Web Intelligence, which is recognized as one of the most promising directions toward creation of the Knowledge-based Society. It is also crucial for development of Intelligent Agent Technologies, Ubiquitous Environments, Brain Informatics, and a number of other domains which are at the heart of research interests of all WIC 2014 participants.

This panel aims at addressing those domains from the perspectives of both Polish and international scientific groups and projects. In particular, the panelists will discuss whether new developments in fields which are traditionally strong in Poland can contribute to solving the currently most important challenges of AI. The panel will also include additional presentations from the laureates of the best PhD thesis competition organized by the Polish AI Society. It is our intention to provide young researchers with some inspirations for future, based on open discussion involving the panelists and the audience.
